Quadruple bagged, seems like Ursack is difficult to use and might not really save that much weight (how much do all those bags weigh?). If I know there will be good forested areas, I'll take a bear bag which is the lightest option. Some areas require a bear cannister and I have one already, so if it's required, or if there are not a lot of trees, I'll just take my bear can.

Honestly so much less hassle to use a bear canister. So many steps each and every time and still a risk of food being destroyed. Simplicity, peace of mind, works anywhere, way less fiddly, slightly heavier and easy learning around volume management. I have an almighty and two different kinds of canister so familiar across the board.

Hey there! Thanks for the great overview of your switch -- I appreciated your breakdown of the DOF differences! I know you recently switched systems (and seem to be using the PD wrist strap now), but wondered if you had any more thoughts on the Simplr strap you featured a few years ago. Do you still use it? Why did you prefer it over the Peak Design Leash? I love how minimalist the Simplr looks but do wish I could attach it to my tripod plate--and also worry the coarser nylon might cause my clothing to pill. What do you think?

I switched from Canon FF to an Olympus E-M1 Mark III. I have one PRO lens in the 12-40 f2.8. Three premium prime lenses with the 25 and 75 f1.8 and the 60 macro. Then the plastic fantastic 40-150 (shockingly good for the $$$) and finally the 75-300 for occasional telephoto shooting. Like you I’m pretty much an advanced amateur photographer. The first four lenses are my sharpest and most used lenses. But shots from that cheapie 40-150 have made it into my gallery shows. I use the fast primes and PRO lenses for event shoots and headshots. I’m a cyclist and a lot of my personal generalist photography is made while cycling so the smaller kit options really suit me. I’m an amateur silversmith as well and I use the HR feature for product photography, although more often than not the standard resolution is way more than enough. I find that I have more keeper shots with this camera over other systems that I’ve owned. I am not a bokeh hound so the background separation using extreme blur isn’t all that critical for me. In fact I’ve been considering going to the sharper depth of field as a style statement in my future work. Enjoy your new kit!

I have both those f/4 pro lenses and I love, love, love them. I paired those with couple super fast manual focus primes (Mitakon, Voigtlander) and those cover 99.9999% of what I want to do. I was considering the 60mm macro for the in-body macro focus stacking but turns out you can focus stack with the f/4 lenses and a macro tube.

Subbed. I shoot micro four thirds and live in the neighborhood. The PL 42.5 Nocticron will scratch any depth of field itch you’re missing. Also recommend the Panasonic 100-300II for birds and hiking. I have an em1.3 and a G9 and use both brands lenses on both.

Great camera, I have two and love them, no more tripods and lugging heavy equipment . Ive had the new mkii on loan for 4 days and the AF on that is even better, its just if its worth the extra money. Have fun with your new kit

I have the 75-300 for longer reach. I’d highly recommend that if you want a budget friendly option before spending big money on a pro lens.

I use the OM-1 and had been considering a full frame with a small prime lens. I was wondering about your comments of the "flat" images. I always shoot raw and of course everything needs post processing. I also convert my images to a linear profile before I start editing. But if you really want small (as I did) try the Ricoh GRIIIx - great image quality!

I just upgraded from Olympus EM5 Mk.2 (which is basically the size of OM5) to OM1 and damn...i am even more impressed! Was considering a used Nikon Z7 but eventually went to OM1 for the same reason like you.Hiking with a heavy camera setup is not fun and prefer to carry extra water or something useful for that weight. With your OM5 you can also take handheld high res photos in low light if you ever feel that image noise is to high.Will act like image stacking and reduce image noise and also give you 50MP files to crop-in a bit.My old EM5 Mk.2 was with me for the last 2 years in over 50 hiking trips from easy summer ones to pretty cold -25'C and never disappoint me.Hiking to Everest Base Camp with that old champ was a joy.All this time was not protected , no lens caps, no camera bag no baby sitting.For a 9 years old camera and battery is pretty remarkable.Your OM5 has better autofocus,better IBIS,better weather sealing,brand new batteries and with your PRO lens will definitely serv you well! Make sure to make your own custom modes and set them to your PASM mode dial. For main mode i use custom mode 1 on A in the mode dial, for wildlife i set the mode 2 to S mode, for astro i set custom mode 3 to M mode and for high res shot mode astro i set custom mode 4 to move mode (your B or movie mode maybe).Dial lever switches from photo mode to video also. One ... maybe 2 things to keep in mind tho.For the OM5 they switch from magnesium body to a magnesium alloy frame in a glass-reinforced polycarbonate outer shell so tripod mount may fail if you abuse-it (heard things about failing with a Peak Design clip) but is still a rugged body overall.Another mild annoyance is the ancient micro USB that not supports USB charging so get a third party external charger like a Patona or something with USB and charge batteries external from a power bank.Oh and get Panasonic 9mm f1.7!!! I know i will for my OM1 for sure.Can't wait to try that for astro.For now i have a budget Olympus 14-150 f4-5.6. Never regret moving from bigger sensor format.I never did.For outdoor use is the best 😄

Hi Stephen. I have all three lenses you have and I’ve been more than happy with them on my trusted EM5II. I might suggest you take a look at two more to basically round out the set. The Lumix Leica 9mm 1.7 and the 15mm 1.7, both work amazingly with my camera. No need to thank me 😊

The size and weight is why I switched from my Nikon full frame to an OM Systems micro four thirds OM5. Well, actually, I bought an OM5. A lot of people complain about the menu system of the OM 5, but I actually am used to it and don’t find it cumbersome at all. I can find what I’m looking for much quicker than I could on my Nikon, which I find that menu system to be daunting. Your kit PRO lens should enable all the features of your OM5, like the ND filter support, focus stacking, etc. the M.Zuiko lenses, while excellent, may not work with some camera features. I’d like to see another video of your impressions of your new camera after you’ve had it for a month or so. Thanks for sharing!

Nice video! I love my M43 system when I want to carry minimum weight. I have the E-M1 ii and I'll be interested in your views on the menu system which I think is its achilles heel. They have revised it for the OM-1 but not the OM-5. Don't ignore the Panasonic lenses to go alongside your Olympus ones. The Panasonic 20mm f1.7 in particular is an outstanding lens, fairly cheap and yet weighs only 100g. Paired with your Om-5 that gives an ultra lightweight and small system which, in my view, is more compelling than the much vaunted Fujifilm 100V.

I share a lot of the same thoughts as you. I switched to the Major a few years ago and it has been my go to ever since. When I use to do a traditional food hang I still took measures to lock away odors. Even with some of the advantages of the Ursack I still carry a throw line with me so it can be hung if need be. I've only had to do that once in the Catskills in a rodent heavy campsite. In the morning there was evidence that a rodent went down the line and got into by buddy's food bag while my Ursack hanging just feet away was ignored.

Anyone else out here a woman just trying to figure out how this pack will work with their breasts? hhaha! I don't understand.

You spent a long, long time NOT explaining why you were waiving around another small exterior bag.

I use the Ursack . I double bag everything and place the ursack on a solid tree well off any trails and well away from camp.

Just finished hiking the CDT, using an Ursack in Montana and Wyoming. Per this video I placed a priority on controlling aromas thru careful food handling and opsak use. Reasonable approach.

Good video! I don't believe anything is going to be well and truly scent proof to a bear, and even then there is no way to eliminate contamination entirely no matter how diligent you are. I use layers as well to try and mitigate as much scent as possible. At the very least it makes sense in my head and makes me feel better.

Snacks eaten while walking go into my pants pockets or hip belt pocket....and I've never found a good way to keep those two places from picking up scent without making eating while walking too cumbersome. My pack is probably closer to the tent than it ought to be and my hiking pants go in the tent, so this issue seems real to me. Any thoughts or tricks regarding walking food?

For such a hyperbolic over the top review, would be more convincing and helpful if you just had all your alleged other packs side by side and point out the supposed “flaw” with each as opposed to just body type quirks and preferences you happen to have. Instead of demonstrating what’s wrong with the other packs for people to see, you’re just filming yourself walking. Not cool. Show some respect to the other pack makers. Fact-based criticism is welcome and how the industry progresses. But not clear from almost all your criticisms how much the issue has to do with your particular body type and your particular gear set up. It’s like watching somebody give an over the top review of a shoe that puts down all other shoes. Everybody has different feet so there will never be a “best” shoe. Anyway, there was some useful content in here but it seemed more ego driven about how you’re going to piss people off. Well, pissing people off is pretty easy to do. What’s harder is to line up all the packs you talk about, and show the pros/cons and show how/where the Cutaway is better. I’ve seen countless gear review videos and this one is over the top ego driven. So weird.

What tool did you use to spark the stove?

Have the same stove. At the beginning it was awesome, but now two days later it suddenly sucks to much air through the four holes at the bottom...that makes a very annoying noises at low setting. If I close one hole of the four its normal again. Do you notice the same behaviour? How can this happen?

This is awesome! I just finished a three day hike and used my new Ursack with and Opsack inside. When I went to camp the first night I found a prefect tree and hung the bag PCT style, so I wasn’t worried there. But on the second night I couldn’t find a tree that kept the bag high enough off the ground, so I tied the Ursack to a tree. During the process, everything you went over came to my mind as questions: did I seal the opsack properly, would the bag get compromised if a bear did find it, was it too close to the trail, etc. Anyway, I was so tired that I decided to quit worrying and go to sleep, but with this video I can see I covered as many bases as possible and strongly reduced the probability of a bear getting my food. I especially like that you went over the way a bear thinks about food and what you’ve got to think of the best outsmart one, knowing it’s olfactory, sight, and memory capabilities (i.e. how habitualized would a bear be given the area I was hiking and camping in). Thanks so much for doing this video!

I put my Ursack Mitty to protect against rodents inside an Ursack major to protect from bears, inside a bearvault canister to protect from the bears that can rip open an Ursack major, and then put that inside a bearikade canister because at least one bear figured out how to open a bearvault (google it, true story). OR… I can just go straight to the Bearikade and also use it as a stool and save money on the extra bags and hassle you need for your Ursack method. And my canister has a very high resale value and I can rent it out, or rent one of i didn’t own one . The shape also fits better in my backpack than the bearvault. I do go ultralight and ultra expensive where need be, and those weight savings elsewhere make the weight of the bear canister less burdensome. And I save time not dealing with hanging bags and I don’t need trees. This is especially useful since five minutes after you hang your bag and get back to camp and sit nice and snug in your tent, you remember you forgot something you need to put back in the bag, or you forgot something you need to take out. And now repeat that scenario, but it’s cold, windy and rainy. Bearikade canister. Not the bearvault. It’s worth the money.

I freakin love my saddleback bifold wallet!!!! I have had it for 2 to 3 weeks now and this might sound weird but I smell it every day. I love how it looks,feels and smells. I might purchase more products from saddleback. I'm looking forward to seeing how it patinas over the years. I can't wait to fully break it in. I paid $90 for it and it is worth every dollar that I spent.

I'm trying to decide between the SOTO WindMaster and the fusion. I've currently got a Trangia but trying to save a bit of weight esp on longer multi day hikes. I love the stability of this one, I tend to use a wide pot to cook max 1 litre so wonder if the SOTO WindMaster with an added support stand for the base would suffice. mostly camping spring to autumn. anyone used both to compare?

I've had it for about a year now and I can easily say this is the best wallet I have ever had. Got it in dark coffee brown, love looking at it everyday. Came from a bulkier coach wallet and it holds relatively the same once the leather stretches.

You completely fail to mention that rodents (i.e. squirrels and chimp monks) can chew through a properly hung bear bag, which makes the ursack better. Furthermore, this video title is misleading as the current version is certified grizzly and black bear proof that cannot chew through it and a puncture hole has a lifetime replacement warranty.
